The Most Crucial Lessons I Learned Losing Weight After 40

If anyone would have told me 5 years ago that I would be in the best shape of my life in my 40s, I would have certainly laughed at them. I would not have thought losing weight after 40 was an option, and being fit and strong was out of the question.

From Overweight to Fit to Running Weight Loss Groups in Less Than 5 years

As a typical mom, I was a busy mom to 3 teenagers running around from school, practices, grocery shopping and home when my husband became terminally ill. I quickly added nurse to my daily to-do list.

I won’t go into the year and a half when our lives changed so drastically except to point out it was a year and a half of weight gain. Eating for comfort doesn’t go along very well with sitting bedside with a dying husband.

My dear husband passed away, I turned 41 and life went on as it tends to do.

I can remember looking in the mirror, not being happy with my body, but thinking, well, I have a 40+ year old body now. I was willing to accept it.

What was I thinking?

We don’t have to accept our overweight, unhealthy body!

Women over 40 can be slim, healthy and fit!

My then 15 year old daughter had started riding horses, a passion of mine growing up. Soon after, my passion reignited, however, riding and being overweight doesn’t make for a good ride.

Finding your WHY to lose weight is crucial to weight loss success.

Without a strong reason WHY to lose weight, I would not be where I am today.

Your why MUST be more important than your weakest link to losing weight. I cared more about riding than I did eating a piece of cheesecake.

When I was on the elliptical gasping for breath, riding was more important than sitting down.


You Can’t Exercise Away a Bad Diet

While I did start with meal replacements, and they have a wonderful amount of nutrients, my carb levels where still too high. It took a while for me to break the sugar habit and even longer before I really realized how many vegetables I should be eating.

When I implemented the nutritional plan for the 21 Day Fix and used the portion containers, that is when I realized my balance of vegetables was off.

Since then, I have been able to increase vegetables, while cutting back the unhealthy carbs…for the most part.


Don’t Be Afraid of the Weights

Weights are not just for men and body builders!

Weights are for regaining or creating a muscle tone that is both slimming and healthy!

Metabolisms will rock with a good muscle tone. While I was doing bodyweight exercises from day 1 when I started Beachbody, I didn’t fully grasp the weights until 2015 when I gave ChaLean Extreme and Hammer & Chisel a try. Hammer & Chisel is one of my favorite Beachbody workouts.


Have a Workout Buddy or Support Group

Changing lifestyle habits isn’t easy. Thankfully for me, I met a wonderful man I married a couple of years after becoming a widow.

He had started Beachbody workouts a couple of years prior and introduced me to them. We worked out together for a while when I scheduled allowed, but even now, we can chat about our workouts.
